"Royalty free music and sound effects from $1"! That title just screams BARGAIN doesn't it? To many independent video production types it certainly will. Budgets are tight in this day and age and anything you can do to stretch your production values is more money in your pocket for more (dare I say it, overpriced) production gear ... or sandwiches if that's more your inclination.
Why am I singing praise of AudioJungle (Envato) as opposed to any other stock library though? There are after all a bunch of others to choose from.
Let me start with the two most obvious draw cards; Price and Quality. In my humble opinion Audiojungle offers the best price for the highest quality royalty free tracks on the web right now and that will be the clincher for most producers right off the bat.
Unless you create you own music or are lucky enough to have friends who are in a band (whose tunes are up to scratch for your production) you are relegated to budgeting for background and theme music. In reality, when you can pass that cost on to the client it's not such a big deal, however in a competitive market that also lessens your competitive edge.
Why AudioJungle is a winner for me; a quality music track for about AUD $19
But what about when you are producing videos for your own creative enjoyment without monetisation? Price and quality become a bigger deal when your own pocket is involved.
Take the above short clip Nicholas Parry and I produced as HighRPM promotional material. We get nothing out of that besides the exposure, another clip for our action demo reels and the enjoyment that comes with the creative process. The action just aches for some great music and AudioJungle coughed up a track that caught my ear after just 15 minutes of searching out demos. $19 AUD later and I have a great backing track for the video complete with licencing and the feel-good warmth knowing that the artist is also earning money for their quality work.
For an equivalent amount on other sites it is hard to find the same quality in music, this again is my most humble of opinions. As an example drawn from my own experience; when I first tried my hand at production I would sit for hours on AudioSparx 'The Music That Powers Hollywood' sifting through track demos to suit my productions. For $19 I would be hard pressed to find any music at all besides maybe a 6 second stinger. For $50 to $70 I might have scored a single use 'web only' licence for a track akin to what is un-affectionately termed 'elevator' music, hardly an attractive option if you believe your video is worth boasting about. For any music that would have been considered catchy or popular I have seen prices starting at around $150 and upwards to $400 or more for a single track - this is just for a basic standard licence, watch these prices double or triple if you are expecting to broadcast to a larger audience or need rights for television.
At AudioJungle in contrast you can get full musical scores for prices starting at around what I purchased the track in the #Burnout reel for and extended licencing if needed for around $70
This is why AudioJungle has become my go-to site for stock music. In addition to quality and price there are added bonuses of good site navigation, well categorised music and sound effects as well as a thriving creative community. Membership of AudioJungle is via an Envato account which also provides easy access to a massive library of affordable custom code, CMS and After Effects templates, video, animation, 3d and stills stock.
Talk about a one stop shop, I haven't found anything better yet!
