If you have been looking for a lactation cookie recipe that really works this one is tried and tested and will save you quite a bit of money making them for yourself at home rather than purchasing them.
With the arrival of a baby in our household and my wife needing to increase the volume of expressed breast milk we were recommended to try lactation cookies.
I'd never heard of them before and was, as usual, slightly dubious. However after seeing my wife experience positive results for herself I did a bit of reading and found that there is some (limited) anecdotal evidence around to suggest that the active ingredient of Brewers Yeast is a galactagogue, a substance that promotes lactation. Whilst the write-ups available on this topic are far from conclusive evidence, the fact that consuming the cookies worked so well encouraged me to make these at home as it was getting quite costly to buy them locally and online.
Fortunately it turns out this is quite easy to do and we have found this recipe to be very effective at increasing flow. Flax seed meal and oats have also been included as they also reportedly have an effect on the production of breast milk. Whether the evidence to support the effect is eventually proven to be solid or not, it was obvious in the results on my wife and others who have tried them that they worked well. Why not give the recipe a try yourself if this is the reason you have arrived at this page.

LACTATION COOKIE RECIPE
Makes approximately 18 cookies
Baking time approx 12 minutes
I'd recommend you don't substitute any of the sugars for artificial sweeteners as I've found the taste of the brewers yeast can be quite strong if you do.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/4 Cups Self Raising Flour
- 1 1/2 Cup Rolled Oats
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons Brewers Yeast
- 2 Tablespoons flax seed meal
- 2 Tablespoons water
- 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract (Concentrate is even better if you can get it)
- 1 Tablespoon Golden Syrup
- 3/4 Cup Dark Brown Sugar
- 3/4 Cup Chocolate Chips
- 110g Softened Butter
- 1 large egg
- In a small bowl combine the flax seed meal and the water and allow to soak for 5 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 170°C (fan forced) or 185°C (conventional).
- Lightly grease your baking trays or line with baking paper.
- In a large mixing bowl vigorously cream the sugar and butter .
- Add the egg to and continue to beat thoroughly till it is an even consistency.
- Add the yeast and the flax seed and ensure it is combined well.
- Add the Vanilla extract and Golden Syrup and beat again thoroughly. The creamed mix should now be a thick consistency similar to soft icing.
- In a second large mixing bowl measure out the flour and scrape the creamed mix into it. Fold through and mix well.
- Add the oatmeal and mix well.
- Add the chocolate chips and mix well till there is a relatively even spread of them throughout the mixture.
- The mixture should make approximately 18 - 20 small sized balls. Space evenly on baking tray to avoid the cookies spreading into each other when cooked. Use your fingers to press down and flatten the balls slightly so they cook through properly.
- Place in oven and bake for 12-13 minutes or until you see the edges begin to brown slightly.
- Once baked, leave cookies to cool on trays for 15 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack for a further 40 - 60 minutes.
- Store in an airtight container.
Thank you for this. We have been looking for a cheaper alternative than buying ready made. I have had success with the ones we have been buying already but being able to make them at home will be the preferred option!
ReplyDeleteWorks for me thanks! Definitely a massive saving making them yourselves. Although I might put a half tablespoon less of the brewer's yeast in my next batch as it reminds me a little of beer or marmite lol
