DigiCert & DNS Made Easy Query Overage Claims: Legacy Account Upsell Warning

A little while back, I received an email from a DigiCert Account Manager claiming my legacy DNS Made Easy account was "exceeding its monthly DNS query threshold" and pushing me to lock in an annual contract upgrade before the price hikes.

My initial reaction was to reply, but after jumping into my dashboard to do some independent checking, I confirmed that my actual metrics weren't even close to my plan limits. After a bit of reading online, it became pretty clear that I wasn't alone, this seems to be part of a much wider, aggressive outreach campaign designed to misrepresent usage metrics and pressure legacy, small-tier users into unnecessary, expensive upgrades.

After waiting over a month for a reply to my technical counter-checks, I received total silence. This whole experience ended up being the perfect catalyst to vote with my feet. I've successfully migrated my domains over to a much more aligned, technically competent, and significantly cheaper provider.

Below is the email trail showing how the outreach started, and the formal "goodbye" compliance pushback I just sent them. Hopefully, this helps anyone else getting these pressure tactics to double-check their raw logs before signing anything.

Subject: Cut your DNS overage costs
To: auki@[redacted]

Hi Auki

My name is Solange Ndaya, your Account Manager for DNS Made Easy.

Your account [redacted] is currently exceeding its monthly DNS query threshold. As your Account Manager, I’d like to connect to discuss moving to a higher query band under a single annual agreement. This would help avoid ongoing overages, create a smoother experience, streamline procurement, and potentially unlock savings through volume-based discounts.

And if you upgrade before 15 April 2026, you will lock in your current pricing for the next financial year.

I can prepare a one‑page cost comparison showing current spend vs projected spend on the upgraded Membership level and any billing impact. If you’d like that, simply reply Quote and I’ll send it over to you.

Bien cordialement  / Kind Regards!
Solange Ndaya

Hi Solange,

I’ve now had a chance to look at my dashboard following your email, but I’m struggling to see where we are exceeding our thresholds.

According to my current service usage stats, we have used approximately 375.8k queries out of a 10 million monthly limit. Even looking back at our peak activity over the last six months, we don't appear to have come anywhere near the 10m mark.

Could you please clarify where you are seeing these overages? If there is a specific metric or a change in the account limits that I’m unaware of, I’d appreciate more detail

Hi Solange, I haven't heard back from you - could you please clarify your email "Your account 37705 is currently exceeding its monthly DNS query threshold " please?  My current dash shows me well below the quotas for monthly queries.  Are you going by a different metric that I am not aware of?

Hi Solange,

I've not heard back from you for over a month since your original email and my follow up responses regarding subsequent checks and confirmation that I was in fact not exceeding my DNS Made Easy accounts' monthly thresholds as you had claimed in your email.  After some independent reading it appears I may have been part of a much wider aggressive customer outreach where account limits are misrepresented to pressure legacy users into an unnecessary upsell or higher annual pricing tiers.

As a long-term DNS Made Easy customer, this is disappointing and totally at odds with my previous experience. This has served as the catalyst for me to migrate my domains to an alternative provider that better aligns with the needs and values of smaller, high-competency users.

Please accept this email as formal notice that a response is no longer required, I am winding down my use of your service and will not be renewing or upgrading any agreements.

Making the switch to ClouDNS

After weighing up my options, I ultimately decided to migrate my domains over to ClouDNS, and the transition has been incredibly smooth. If you are looking for a solid alternative that does not compromise on infrastructure but is actually realistic with its pricing, I highly recommend checking out their Premium M plan. For just $4.95/month (USD), it hits an absolute sweet spot for value, offering:

  • Global Anycast DNS Network: Massively improves performance and redundancy across multiple continents.
  • Generous Limits: Support for up to 50 DNS zones and 2,000 records, which easily handles complex multi-domain environments.
  • 150 Million Queries/Month: A huge overhead that ensures you won't get stung with unexpected overage bills.
  • Advanced Features: Includes Secondary DNS support, DNSSEC, HTTP API access for automation, and 2 DNS Failover checks.

If you’re thinking about making the move yourself and want to support the blog, you can sign up using my ClouDNS Referral Link. If you click through and end up subscribing to a paid plan, I’ll earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend tools I actually use to run my own infrastructure, and ClouDNS has genuinely saved me a future headache while helping to reduce my monthly costs.
